How To Squat Properly

I'm sure we have all heard of a "squat". We do it in our daily lives without really realizing that we are performing a squat. When we drop something and go to pick it up or even going to the toilet, we squat all the time. Other times that people squat is when they are working out. People tend to squat to improve their leg muscles, buttocks and also upper and lower body strength. All of this in just one movement. This is why it is important to know how to properly squat so that each time we are working out it can be as effective as possible.

1. Begin in a standing position with you spine neutral and your body upright.

2. Your feet should be slightly wider than shoulder width apart and your legs remain forward and straight.

3. Hold your chest up and extend your arms straight out in front of you with the palms facing down.

4. Take a breath in and hinge your hips back by bending your knees and hips. This will allow your hips to ease backwards.

5. Ensure that the bend in your knees is in line with your toes. Keep the spine neutral.

6. Squat down until you hamstring (the back of your thighs) are parallel to the ground.

Challenge: if you can go further down do so however you may find this to be more difficult.

7. Once you are in the squat position hold for a few seconds and then return back to standing position.
